Federal Government Shutdown Threatens Vital Assistance Programs: Food Aid and Housing Support at Risk

The federal government shutdown has lasted almost a month, and it’s having widespread effects on millions of people in the United States. Some states are looking for ways to cover the loss of funding for food and childcare assistance.

Programs like SNAP (food assistance) and certain Head Start preschools may run out of federal money soon. The WIC program, which helps mothers care for newborns and young children, could lose its funding in the following week.

How Housing Assistance Is Affected

Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, helps low-income families, older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities pay for housing.

For now, Section 8 housing assistance will continue at least until mid-November 2025. If the shutdown lasts beyond that, there could be changes:

  • No new vouchers will be given out.
  • Lease renewals may be put on hold.
  • Housing inspections and new applications for assistance will stop until the government opens again.

It’s important for people who use Section 8 vouchers to know they still need to pay their part of the rent during the shutdown.
